Today I tested my set up for painting en plein air with acrylics. I like being able to paint light over dark after waiting only two minutes but I don’t like the feel of the paint as I apply it to the canvas. Maybe I’m too in love with oils and watercolor to give acrylics a fair chance. I’ll try again tomorrow.
Scraggly Pine, cornfield and fence – 12″ x 6″ acrylic on canvas board
Limited palette:
cadmium yellow medium, cadmium barium sulfide and hansa, permanent alizarin crimson, quinacridone burnt orange, phthalo blue green shade, ultramarine blue (green shade) and white gesso.
I’ve have an odd selection of acrylic paints, certainly not my usual palette. As long as I keep in mind where the pigments are located on the color wheel, I know what they’ll do when mixed with one another … and it’s fun to experiment with different palettes.

Hey Chris, that looks nice! When you come we can play more with acrylics…I’ve grown to love them. hugs, J
Thanks, Joanie. I enjoyed working with them in the studio on top of tile cement and lace, but en plein air is a totally different situation. I find myself making faces the whole time I’m painting. The creative flow is constantly being broken. Looking forward to playing together in November!
