Embracing the technique of Marc Taro Holmes, (If you click on this link, also click on the big empty box that appears so that you can view Marc’s Urban Sketches.) I’m making the transition back to looser sketchbook drawings. He offers an excellent and inexpensive course on Craftsy.com. Thank you, Susan, for introducing me to Marc’s work. Both his urban sketches and his figures-in-motion inspire me.
Finally, the weather warmed up enough for Tom and I to get some yard work done. Next, morning, sipping coffee on the deck, I sketched the tree stump and the tree slices, now neatly arranged along the fence.
The basic technique?
1. Very loose pencil sketch to determine size, placement and basic shapes.
2. Define shapes more clearly with ink lines, delineating darkest dark shapes.
3. Using brush pen clarify the darkest dark shapes.
4. Playfully add watercolor washes to bring the sketch to life.
