The heat and humidity in Marseille were close to intolerable. Everyone wilted. Usually it is hot, but not humid. Usually it is not THAT hot in mid June. Usually it doesn’t rain in June. My last night in Marseille the thunder roared and the lightning put on a good show. Rain washed the soot from the streets and sidewalks. The week-long streak of high humidity ended. For the next two weeks, the weeks I spent in Les Bassacs, the skies filled with clouds of every color and every shape rather than the crystal blue, cloudless skies that are normal for June in Provence.
Provence is the same latitude as Montreal. The light lingers until well past ten o’clock at night. Luisa and I went for long walks together after dinner, basking in the fragrance of lavender fields and the glow of light bouncing back and forth between the ground and the clouds.
