Expectations are useful to get me to places I might not otherwise explore. Often, the inspiration that gets me there gives way to something different. In Provence, I thought my focus would be on fields of lavender. Instead, I found myself attracted to the olive orchards and the touch of cooler greens that enhance the patchwork patterns of the landscape. In the mornings and evenings I walked to the lavender field at the top of the hill, stood among the fragrant herb for a few minutes before wandering into the olive orchard to paint.
