Influencing Artist – Tsugouharu Foujita (1886 – 1968)
I discovered the work of Fujita in the Musée National d’Art Moderne at Centre G. Pompidou in Paris. His bold shapes contrasting his delicate line work caught my attention.

Day One: January 22, 2018 – New York Coffee Shop Dala
Coffee shop dala and Café by Foujita
A young woman sat across from her mother a few tables away.
I decided to use pencil first. I don’t know that I’ve ever started a dala with pencil. I felt like a fish out of water with this one and I wanted to keep her face delicate regardless of the rest of the subject matter.
Foujita often includes text in his work. I chose to add the sign I saw through the cafe window.
Several more customers sat at the tables while my dala grew.
I added ink at the end, except the figure of the young woman.
