Often during the past week Virginia Woolf’s book A Room of One’s Own has come to mind. I recall that in it she mentions that women would feign nervous breakdowns in order to have an extended period of time and a private space to themselves in order to write, or perhaps follow another creative passion.
During the last few years, I’ve traveled a great deal. I’ve explored, sketched, painted and taught. I’ve spent little time processing my experiences and incorporating them into my work. This year is different. I’m taking the time to learn new film editing skills, contemplate how I can better express my experiences visually and what it means to me to be an artist. I’m fortunate that I don’t need to feign a nervous breakdown in order to follow my passion. Here in Belleville, my lodging provides me with a nurturing environment, excellent workspace, great music, a lovely garden and a cat to keep me company. Lala is a loving companion who keeps me grounded by needing to be fed twice a day.
