August 6, 2014 – The word “challenge” is a bit too intimidating to describe a playful stretching of the imagination and fine-tuning of visual awareness. I invent games to entertain myself as I trip along this journey as an artist, games that will keep my brain from hitting the cruise control or the automatic pilot buttons. From now on, I will refer to a game exercise as a Brain Flex rather than a challenge. A unique selection Brain Flexes that will be presented at each Boot Camp for Artists Workshop. After dinner I walk the two mile loop along the road that runs in front of my house. Something usually catches my eye and sets the theme for the evening stroll. I use my phone to snap photos, composing images based on the theme, whatever it might be. This week, the theme on two occasions were based on a specific color. One evening it was pink:
Last night the theme was the color orange:
Each evening, I snapped more than a hundred shots and ended up with less than a dozen images that I feel are strong compositions based on shapes and values. Just the slightest tweak in an angle can make the difference between an image being “ho hum” and one that grabs my attention. The same applies to a drawing or a painting. Practicing with a photo is quick and easy. It would take several months to experience the same visual growth as I gained in less than two hours.
