It’s day 295 of posting every day on the Daily Sketchers Facebook page! What an amazing experience it’s been. I’m pleased that we, as a group of artists, have been able to inspire one another and support one another’s efforts without positive feedback and enthusiasm. Thank you, to everyone, for your generous comments and your willingness to post your sketches.
At times it was difficult for me to post, yet my commitment to the group kept me posting, even if it was only a five minute sketch at 11:50 at night. I learned a great deal about the responsibility of setting an example and being the living proof that daily sketching is possible. Though I’ve sketched almost daily for years, I discovered the difference between everyday and almost everyday. It was the days when life challenged my time the most that I discovered more about why I am an artist and what drives me to paint and draw.
So … I have decided to continue the Daily Sketchers group in 2018 and I am committed to posting everyday during 2018. Because I am who I am, I need a new challenge for myself. Those of you participating may continue to sketch as you have been sketching or you may join me at any time during the year to meet the new challenge.
The new challenge is to sketch and post daily, influenced by another artist. The artist of influence may be living or deceased. You may change the artist of influence daily or repeat the artist at any time. The most important part of the challenge is to maintain your uniqueness while at the same time, stretching yourself to include an aspect of the artist you choose to be influenced by. If you wish to include comments about your experience and how you chose to shift your work, please do. This challenge will begin on New Year’s Day 2018. I’m giving you a month to gather a stable of artists to be influenced by.
This idea came to mind as I explored the museums in London. I realized, once again, how much I have to learn from the artists who have walked this path before me. I can’t wait to see how my work evolves during 2018. I want to thank Carol Esch, once again, for talking me into starting the Daily Sketchers Facebook Group. The last thing I need, so I thought, was another blog or group on the internet! I was wrong. It has been well worth the time and effort. I’m grateful for the nudge.
If you are not a member of the closed group Daily Sketchers, and wish to be added, please let me know. though I encourage you to post every day, it is not a requirement to do so.
